Jason Gourlas, MPAS, PA-C

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”  Psalm 37:4

For as long as he could remember, Jason has wanted to be a detective.  While serving as an Army medic, Jason realized that medicine combined detective work with his other love, science. He went through the Army PA program at Fort Sam as a member of the Texas Army National Guard and spent the next 7 years as the Battalion Medical Officer for a mechanized infantry unit. During his 22 year career in medicine, he has had a wide variety of experience in family practice, emergency medicine, neurotology (hearing and balance specialty), and surgical critical care.

In 2006 Jason began to suffer from his own health challenges for which his conventional medical education provided few treatment options and no cures. As is often the case with practitioners in the functional medicine space, he sought solutions for his wellness issues, investigating natural, integrative and functional medicine approaches. He was fascinated by the things that he had never been taught, and horrified by the fact that he had never been taught them.  He likens his self-education to the peeling back of the layers of an onion, finding that his health issues improved as he applied the principles found in just the first few “layers” of understanding.

Jason became a voracious reader and researcher of functional medicine.  He pursued more formal education, attending seminars through the Institute of Functional medicine and achieving Diplomate status (akin to board certification for mid-level practitioners) through the American Board of Anti-Aging Health Practitioners.  He lectured at Weston A. Price Foundation meetings and various other wellness-oriented organizations. He consulted with friends and family about their wellness issues.  As a follower of Christ, he sought out other Christian practitioners of integrative medicine to learn how they combined their passion for healing with their faith.

One of the doctors to whom Jason reached out was Whole Health founder, Dr. Gilbert Manso. In 2009, Jason spent some time shadowing him and learning from him at his San Marcos location. From that time, Jason and his wife, Val, have prayed and waited for the right opportunity for him to practice his passion.

Nearly a decade passed between that time and the day that Jason came across the advertisement for an additional healthcare provider at Whole Health Houston. He and we believe that God brought him here.

Jason sees each patient as a triune being comprised of a spirit that resides in a physical body and that has a soul (the mind, will and emotions). He believes that optimal wellness will be elusive unless all three of these areas are addressed.  His approach to wellness assumes that disease is a manifestation of deficiencies (of nutrients, sunlight, love, peace) and toxicities (from BPA, pesticides, allergens, unforgiveness, anger, excessive stress).

He recognizes that although we are ALL fearfully and wonderfully made, we are all a little different. Each of us have our own unique set of genes, exposures, experiences, and beliefs.  His desire is to partner with you, to explore your specific concerns, and to discover the best way to address them.

Jason and his wife, Val, are the proud parents of several grown children and one homeschooled eighth-grader.  They love being outdoors; experiencing God’s creation as they travel; eating locally sourced, organic and traditionally prepared foods; and working with each other to take care of their family, friends, and community.

Jason is thrilled to bring together his knowledge of healing with his love of the Great Physician for the benefit of Whole Health Houston.
