Mold is a type of fungi that most often grows in warm and humid environments. Mold can be responsible for producing toxic compounds, also called mycotoxins, that are released into the air. All mold has the potential for producing these toxins, but different factors such as the type of mold, the length of time it has been growing, and the amount present impact how toxic it can become. Water-damaged homes and buildings are especially susceptible to having amplified amounts of mold and an increased risk for mycotoxin exposure. A bathroom leak, or areas that are exposed to increased moisture and condensation such as air-conditioning units can also create a moldy environment. When these toxins are inhaled or ingested, they can lead to mold toxicity which poses a plethora of serious health complications.
What Is Mold Toxicity?
Mold toxicity refers to the buildup of mycotoxins within the body, which burdens the body’s detoxification pathways, and interferes with cellular processes. Mycotoxins are environmentally introduced, most often when there is toxic mold present within a home or work environment where an individual spends a large amount of their time. The toxic mold releases its spores which are then inhaled. Most often, they initially affect the respiratory system, but can travel further and enter the bloodstream. Once the mycotoxins are within your blood stream they impede mitochondria function, and can also bond to proteins and lipids, affecting the immune system, organs, vascular system, hormones, and brain. As the liver attempts to detox the toxins from your body, it often becomes overburdened and overall function decreases.
Some individuals are more susceptible to developing mold toxicity. Genetics, difficulty detoxing, and other factors can contribute to a greater risk for developing symptoms.
Symptoms of Mold Toxicity
The symptoms of mold toxicity are extensive and often very difficult to track down. Some more commonly seen symptoms of mold toxicity are:
- Neurological concerns
- Mood abnormalities such as depression, anxiety, and paranoia
- Chronic fatigue
- Migraines and headaches
- Digestive concerns
- Skin concerns such as psoriasis, rashes, and eczema
- Chronic sinus congestion
- Muscle weakness
- Development of food sensitivities and allergies
- Coughing and shortness of breath
The multitude of symptoms and their variability is due to the presence of the immune system throughout the body. Neurological affects can be contributed to the fibers in the nasal cavity which can allow toxins to bypass the blood brain barrier when inhaled.
After having identified the presence of mycotoxins within the body via testing, we will begin detox protocols. It is crucial for the individual to be in a mold-free environment before beginning to detox. Using quality home mold tests and remediation ensures that you have stopped the exposure.
After restoring a safe environment, you can begin detox protocols. Every patient is different, and your provider will determine what the safest first steps are for beginning to detox mycotoxins. Most often, detoxing will consist of supplements, I.V. support, dietary recommendations, and occasionally prescription medication. Improving and healing detox pathways is largely important and will be the first step on the road to healing and restoration.
Mold and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS):
Mycotoxin exposure and CIRS are often related. CIRS refers to an overt response of the innate immune system when exposed to biotoxins. In the case of mold exposure wherein the mycotoxins are difficult for the body to detox, the inflammatory immune response continues to mount, and the individual remains in an inflamed state.
Affected individuals have been seen to develop sensitivities to chemicals, as well as electromagnetic sources in some cases.
Another aspect of the illness is the tendency for affected individuals to have sudden and severe reactions to their environment. This may be due to a slight increase in exposure to a toxin their body has developed sensitivity to. Walking into a moldy building or breathing in cleaning chemicals may trigger a severe response of histamine release, mast cells, and pro-inflammatory cytokines.
